Executive Director


The Center's Executive Director is Peter Anderson. Mr. Anderson is also President of RecycleWorlds Consulting, Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Department of Applied Economics on recycling systems and Chairperson of the National Recycling Coalition Policy Workgroup. Previously, he has operated a buyback and processing center.

He received his B.S. in economics from Cornell University and his M.S. in solid waste planning and industrial organization of the solid waste industry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He has published articles in BioCycle, Resource Recycling, Environmental Decisions, MSW Management, Recycling Times, Waste News, Elements 2000, Waste Age and other solid waste journals; and he has been an invited speaker at the National Recycling Congress, the National League of Cities, the World Recycling Congress, the US Conference of Mayors, the Solid Waste Association of North America, Bev-Pak, Pack-Expo, Nova-Pack, the BioCycle National Conference, the Northeast Recycling Council, the Rose Institute for State and Local Government, the University of Wisconsin Extension Solid Waste Seminars, the California Resource Recycling Association, the Association of Oregon Recyclers, the Association of Recyclers of Wisconsin, the Illinois Recycling Association, the Pennsylvania Recycling Conference, the Recycling Association of Minnesota, the North Carolina Recycling Association, the Recycling Council of Ontario and elsewhere.

 



                        Director of Research

The Center's Director of Research is Dr. Fred Townsend.  Dr. Townsend has held a broad range of positions in industry, professional practice, and academia that includes the practice of Landscape Architecture, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of higher-education, and as a senior engineer in the research and development of software and systems for spatial data and image processing.

He received his B.S. in Landscape Architecture from the Ohio State University, where he was twice awarded the Faculty Prize in Landscape Architecture; his M.S. in Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin, where he focused on the development of computerized resource mapping tools for use in research and planning; and his Ph.D. in Environmental Monitoring from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr Townsend has published technical papers and reports in his areas of expertise.  He has taught remote sensing and image processing at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Auckland, New Zealand.  He has participated in projects as diverse as site reclamation for use in nursery stock propagation, electrical transmission line visual impact evaluation, thermal plume analysis of electric power plant discharges into Lake Michigan, and classification of Wisconsin Lakes according to trophic level as determined from satellite imagery.  He has performed research, planning, consulting and software engineering for entities as diverse as the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the USDA Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, University of Wisconsin Department of Facilities Planning, and Abbott Laboratories.
