On July 28th, Waste Management, the largest waste services company, took over Oakleaf, the largest waste broker, for $425 million. Waste appears to have closed on this deal without first submitting the transaction for antitrust review by the Justice Department, as is normally the case for mergers valued at more than $62.1 million.
Based on what is presently known, the Center is actively opposing this acquisition, and on August 8th submitted a petition to the Justice Department requesting the agency to assume jurisdiction, immediately seek a temporary injunction to prevent Waste from accessing Oakleaf’s confidential hauler pricing data, and then move to unwind the merger.
